About the AVIF to JPG Converter
AVIF is a newer, highly efficient image format, but many apps, editors, and older devices still cannot open it. Converting to JPG makes the image work everywhere. This tool decodes your AVIF files using your browser and re-encodes them as JPG on your own device — no upload, no sign-up — and lets you tune the quality or target a file size.
AVIF holds more than a JPG can carry
AVIF is an AV1 intra-frame still, and it supports 10- and 12-bit colour depth, HDR, wide colour gamuts and an alpha channel. JPG is 8-bit sRGB with no transparency. So an HDR AVIF is tone-flattened to standard range on conversion, and wide-gamut colours are clipped into sRGB — deep reds and cyans come out slightly duller. If the source is an ordinary 8-bit SDR image from a web page, which most AVIF files are, none of this applies and the conversion is visually clean.
Expect the file to grow, and that is the point
AVIF is among the most efficient image formats in use; the same picture as a JPG is commonly two to three times larger. You are converting for compatibility, not for size, and it is worth being clear about that before you replace an archive. If you want compatibility and a small file, WebP sits between the two — supported by every current browser, smaller than JPG, and readable by far more software than AVIF.
Frequently asked questions
Why convert AVIF to JPG?
Plenty of programs and devices still cannot open AVIF. JPG is supported virtually everywhere, so converting guarantees the image opens in any app you send it to.
Will I lose quality converting AVIF to JPG?
JPG uses lossy compression, but at the default quality the difference is invisible for normal photos. Raise the quality slider for a near-identical result, or lower it to shrink the file.
Does my AVIF file get uploaded anywhere?
No. The whole conversion runs in your browser, so your images are never sent to a server.
