AVIF holds more than a JPG can carry

AVIF is an AV1 intra-frame still, and it supports 10- and 12-bit colour depth, HDR, wide colour gamuts and an alpha channel. JPG is 8-bit sRGB with no transparency. So an HDR AVIF is tone-flattened to standard range on conversion, and wide-gamut colours are clipped into sRGB — deep reds and cyans come out slightly duller. If the source is an ordinary 8-bit SDR image from a web page, which most AVIF files are, none of this applies and the conversion is visually clean.

Expect the file to grow, and that is the point

AVIF is among the most efficient image formats in use; the same picture as a JPG is commonly two to three times larger. You are converting for compatibility, not for size, and it is worth being clear about that before you replace an archive.
