PNG is great for graphics with sharp edges and transparency, but for photos and screenshots it often produces needlessly large files. Converting to JPG can shrink them dramatically. What you gain, and what JPG cannot carry

PNG stores every pixel exactly and keeps an alpha channel; JPG discards the detail your eye is least likely to miss and has no transparency at all. Two things follow. Photographs usually shrink dramatically — five to ten times is ordinary — with nothing visible at quality 80. And any see-through area is flattened onto a solid background, so a logo that looked clean on white will carry a visible block behind it. The other thing JPG handles badly is hard edges: text in a screenshot, a thin UI line, the outline of an icon. Those pick up faint halos, an artifact called ringing, because JPG's 8×8 blocks are tuned for gradients rather than sharp boundaries.

When the PNG is still the right file

Keep the PNG for logos and any graphic that has to sit over a coloured background, for screenshots with text you need to stay crisp, and for anything you will re-edit — each JPG save re-compresses, and the losses compound across saves. If your goal is simply a smaller file and the image is a graphic rather than a photo, WebP is the better target: it keeps transparency and still cuts size sharply. Use JPG when the destination is a photo upload, an email attachment, or a system that rejects anything else.
